AI Chatbots are tools that today’s students will most likely encounter when they enter the working world.  No matter how we feel about it, Chatbots are available for students to use and it is our responsibility to provide them the skills they need to use them safely and properly.  So you may be asking yourself what are some strategies I can use in the classroom?

One strategy is to use AI detectors.  If you suspect a student has potentially used AI in their writing, you can run it through an AI detector.  Remember, since they are just as new as AI Writers, they are not the end all.   They may not be reliable and can produce false positives.  They can, however, be used as an opportunity to have conversations with students on what led them to the AI writer and what support they need to formulate their own responses.  Here is a list of a few AI detectors:

  • AI Text Classifier (ChatGPT detection tool)
  • AIWriting Check
  • Turnitin – Is working on a AI detector
  • AI Content Detector Extension on Chrome
  • AICheat Check
  • GPTzero
  • Writer
  • Even ChatGPT- Just type in the response “was this created by ChatGPT” and paste in the passage
