However, coding opportunities shouldn\u2019t just come during the week of Hour of Code.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/span><\/p><p style=\"font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-family: Raleway; font-size: 14px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px; font-weight: 400;\">Recent research puts coding at the forefront of future careers. &nbsp; Therefore, the language of coding is important for the development and future of our kids and we need to find more opportunities to expose them to it.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-inner-section elementor-element elementor-element-8abc243 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"8abc243\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-inner-column elementor-element elementor-element-ae8b828\" data-id=\"ae8b828\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e2413a4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e2413a4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p style=\"font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-family: Raleway; font-size: 14px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px; font-weight: 400;\">There are many misconceptions about coding, such as it is only for math geniuses, it is boring or you need excellent computer skills.\u00a0 That simply is not true and anyone can learn to code. Coding is about problem solving and creativity. The thought of teaching kids to code at any level could be a scary thought, especially if you aren\u2019t a tech geek or computer whiz. However, remember above those are misconceptions when it comes to coding.\u00a0 Here are some tips to help overcome these fears and assist in integrating coding in your classroom:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Learn with them &#8211; Use introductory lessons to learn alongside your students<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emphasize that Coding=Creativity &#8211; Coding is creating and making things come to life<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Encourage Exploration &#8211; Find age appropriate tools, encourage\u00a0 children to experiment, and consistently evaluate if they are reaching limits in applications for growth<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Find a Mentor &#8211; Have students find mentors (works for you as well).\u00a0 Mentors can guide when stumbling across roadblocks or challenge them to keep exploring.\u00a0 Can also shed light on experiences and the different coding careers<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make Coding a Social Activity &#8211; Provide and encourage opportunities for students to collaborate as they code<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tap Into Each Child\u2019s Passions &#8211; Differentiate your coding experiences for your students based on their interests.\u00a0 There are many apps that focus on things from drawing to animation to storytelling to game design, and more.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep Problem Solving Fun &#8211; Encourage students to be curious, to tinker, and to solve problems. Push them to learn how something works and find different ways to do things.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Curate\/Use existing resources &#8211; Search online for coding tool and resources including the DCDS Tech Website.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We just completed another week of Hour of Code and hopefully you had a chance last week to set aside 60 min of time to expose your students to coding opportunities.
