Hour of Code is an initiative designed to introduce&nbsp; coding using 1 hour activities&nbsp;&nbsp;to show that anybody can learn the basics of coding and broaden participation in the field of computer science.&nbsp;&nbsp;Having an understanding of coding is&nbsp; important to provide a foundation for success in any 21st-century career path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, beyond that, coding can can teach skills that apply across the curriculum that go beyond computer science.&nbsp; &nbsp;It helps nurture problem-solving skills, logic, and creativity.&nbsp;&nbsp;Over the past few years, we have had a variety of classrooms participate in Hour of Code and the hope is that we continue to increase our numbers.&nbsp; &nbsp;Here are a variety of resources to&nbsp; assist in getting the ball rolling in your classroom&#8230;whether it be before, during or after the week of Hour of Code.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>HOUR OF CODE: ACTIVITIES AND TUTORIALS: <\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;The activities below only require 60 minutes to complete and would be great activities to run at some point next week.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/code.org\/dance\">Dance Party<\/a> &#8211; code.org has partnered with musicians (Ed Sheeran, Imagine Dragons, Avicii and Aloe Blacc, Keith Urban and more) for dance party coding activity<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/code.org\/minecraft\">Minecraft turtorials<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/hourofcode.com\/lightbot\">Lightbot<\/a> &#8211; uses programming logic to solve fun puzzles<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/studio.code.org\/s\/applab-intro\/stage\/1\/puzzle\/1\">Intro to App Lab<\/a> &#8211; Students 13+ can create their own app in JavaScript using block-based or text based programming<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/scratch.mit.edu\/projects\/editor\/?tip_bar=name&amp;utm_source=codeorg\">Animate your name in Scratch<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/codehs.com\/editor\/hoc\/video\/1065330\/6645\/4753?\">Coding Mathematics Models <\/a>&#8211; Students grades 6+ can learn to code different mathematical models in the language Python with Tracy the Turtle.&nbsp; It is recommended students have completed Algebra I or higher.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For additional activities and information on Hour of Code, visit <a href=\"https:\/\/hourofcode.com\/us\/learn\">www.hourofcode.com\/us.<\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>ACTIVITIES THAT DON&#8217;T INVOLVE A COMPUTER: <\/em><\/strong>Are you interested in teaching an activity without the use of a computer or you teach a level that does not have a computer?&nbsp; No Problem.&nbsp; These activities are Unplugged coding ideas:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.helloruby.com\/\">Hello Ruby<\/a>&#8211; This book series is a great way to teach programming to young learners<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/curriculum.code.org\/hoc\/unplugged\/4\/\">Dance Party Unplugged<\/a> &#8211; same activity as above, but without the use of a computer<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/viewer?url=http%3A%2F%2Fcsedweek.org%2Ffiles%2FCSEDrobotics.pdf\">My Robotic Friends<\/a> &#8211; this is a fun unplugged activity teaches students the basics of coding by having students accomplish specific tasks without discussing them.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>Printable coding cards &#8211; &nbsp;Printable coding cards can be used with students for a hands-on, offline coding experience. Coding cards from&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/drive\/folders\/0B09VFAbe_8VMT0RJRlRfZk1wMEk\" target=\"_blank\">Tickle App<\/a>,&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scratchjr.org\/pdfs\/blocks.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Scratch Jr<\/a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/scratched.gse.harvard.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/scratch_blocks_package_0_9.zip\" target=\"_blank\">Scratch<\/a>&nbsp;can be used with online coding activities, unplugged lessons or even with robots!<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>GOING BEYOND AN HOUR OF CODE:&nbsp;<\/strong> If you are looking to spend more than 60 min of coding next week (or in the future) going beyond the Hour of Code here are some activities to try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><em>Choice boards<\/em><\/strong> &#8211; Use these choice boards if you have a lot of classes participating in the Hour of Code or if you want to give your students the option of choosing their activity.<ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1OYHC2tHw1RB9Ngv3eXfhyiSf5J1_IwG01I4Z2jGJLOQ\/edit?usp=sharing\">Hour of Code choice board for K-5<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1KUnM6TU8FzQMuTTgHerx85D5AUmXzxkNba8aWyb-W10\/edit?usp=sharing\">Hour of Code choice board for Grade 6+<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/presentation\/d\/1tWype8dLCxbIiEj34V3GyJyUDESll9hZIqtD-Mwo7yA\/edit?usp=sharing\"><strong><em>Hour of Code HyperDoc for K-2<\/em><\/strong><\/a><strong><em> <\/em><\/strong>&#8211;&nbsp; this mini unit is geared for grades 5-8 to explore what makes a computer a computer, binary, circuits, logic and more.&nbsp; It includes a New BreakoutEDU digital, a show what you know choice board, and fun challenges to get students thinking<\/li><li><strong><em>BreakoutEDU digital<\/em><\/strong> &#8211;
